How many bones are in the human body?
An adult has 206 bones. Together they form the skeleton, which works like the frame of a house: it holds your body up, protects what is inside and, with the help of muscles, lets you move. Babies are born with more bones, which join together as they grow.

Questions people ask
How many bones does a baby have?
A newborn has about 270 to 300 bones and bone pieces. Many of them join as the child grows, such as the skull and sacrum bones, until reaching the adult 206.
What is the largest bone in the body?
The femur, the thigh bone. It is the longest and strongest, about a quarter of a person’s height. The smallest is the stirrup, inside the ear.
How many vertebrae are in the spine?
The spine starts with 33 vertebrae: 7 in the neck, 12 in the upper back, 5 in the lower back, 5 that fuse into the sacrum and about 4 in the tailbone. In adults, counting the sacrum and tailbone as single bones, that makes 26 bones.
How many ribs do humans have?
There are 24 ribs, 12 on each side, in both men and women. A few people are born with one extra or one fewer.
Why are we taller in the morning?
During the day, body weight squeezes the discs between the vertebrae and they lose a little water. At night, lying down, they recover. The difference is usually about 1 cm.
Is bone alive?
Yes. Bone has cells, blood vessels and nerves, and renews itself all the time. That is why it can heal after a fracture. Inside many bones is the marrow, which makes blood cells.
