What does the pancreas do?
The pancreas sits behind the stomach and has two jobs. First, it makes a juice that helps break food down in the intestine. Second, it makes insulin, which helps sugar from food get into the cells to become energy.

Questions people ask
What is insulin?
A hormone made by the pancreas. It works like a key (just a comparison) that opens cells so sugar from the blood can get in and become energy. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the blood.
How is the pancreas linked to diabetes?
In type 1 diabetes, the body attacks the pancreas cells that make insulin, so the person needs insulin treatment. In type 2, the body responds poorly to insulin and, over time, the pancreas may not keep up. Both types need medical care.
Where is the pancreas?
Deep in the belly, behind the stomach, lying sideways. Its head is on the right, in the curve of the intestine, and its tail reaches the spleen on the left.
What is pancreatitis?
Inflammation of the pancreas. The most common causes are gallstones blocking the duct outlet and heavy alcohol use. It causes strong pain in the upper belly that can spread to the back, and needs medical care.
