How many bones are in the skull?

Explanation
Short sentences, no hard words. Great for kids.
Quick answer

The skull has 22 bones that fit together like a puzzle. Eight make a "box" that protects the brain and fourteen make the face. Only one of them moves: the mandible, your chin bone.

Questions people ask

What is the only bone in the head that moves?

The mandible, your chin bone. It connects to the temporal bones just in front of the ears and lets you open and close your mouth to talk, chew and yawn. (The tiny ear bones also vibrate, but they are minuscule.)

What is a baby’s soft spot and when does it close?

Babies are born with skull bones that are still apart, joined by soft membranes. The soft areas are called fontanelles. They let the head pass through at birth and give the brain room to grow. The back one closes in the first few months. The front one, the largest, usually closes between 18 months and 2 years.

What is the smallest bone in the human body?

The stirrup (stapes), one of the three tiny ear bones. It is about the size of a grain of rice and sits inside the temporal bone, next to the ear.

Are teeth bones?

No. Teeth are covered in enamel, which is even harder than bone, but they don’t have the same structure and cannot repair themselves. That is why a cavity does not "heal" like a broken bone.

Why doesn’t a skull have a nose?

Because only the top of the nose is bone (the nasal bones). The rest is cartilage, a softer tissue that does not stay on the skull. That is why a pear-shaped hole appears where the nose was.
