How many bones are in the foot?
Each foot has 26 bones, plus muscles, tendons and ligaments. Together they make a curve under the foot, the arch, which works like a spring (just a comparison) and helps you walk, run and jump without getting hurt.

Questions people ask
What are flat feet?
It is when the arch is low and the whole sole touches the ground. In children up to about age 6 it is normal, because the arch is still forming. If it causes pain or tired legs, an orthopedist can check it.
What does the Achilles tendon do?
It connects the calf muscles to the heel. It lifts the heel when you stand on tiptoe, walk, run or jump.
What happens in a sprained ankle?
The foot rolls inward and the ligaments on the outside of the ankle overstretch or tear. It swells and hurts. Rest, ice and raising the foot help; if you can’t put weight on it, get medical care.
Why does my heel hurt?
The most common cause in adults is plantar fascia inflammation, with pain on the first steps in the morning. In very active children it can be irritation of the heel’s growth area. If it lasts, see a doctor.
